TS Galaxy will be looking to keep their African hopes alive when they host Sekhukhune United in a Betway Premiership clash at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday, April 27.

The Rockets have been one of the surprise teams in the league this season since Adnan Beganovic took over the reins from Sead Ramovic in November as they embarked on an impressive 11-match unbeaten run.

However, Beganovic’s side have stumbled in recent weeks and a 2-1 defeat to Magesi on April 20 extended their winless run to three games and left them four points adrift of the top three in fifth place.

Babina Noko currently occupy the final CAF berth after they beat local rivals Polokwane City 2-0 on April 19 to open up a two-point gap to Stellenbosch, who were on continental duty that weekend.

The Limpopo outfit have now won three of their last four outings and they have a game in hand on Galaxy, which will be played on April 30 against title hopefuls Orlando Pirates.

But their record against the Rockets does not make for good reading, having only won one of their seven meetings in the top flight since 2021-22.

Beganovic acknowledged his players didn’t perform well enough to win at Magesi, but he criticised the Seshego Stadium pitch, claiming it was tough to play on.

“The opponent plays long balls and set-pieces, but if you commit the mistakes like we did and concede two goals, then we can’t expect to win the game. In the end, we had the opportunity to score in the last minute but we missed,” the Bosnian said.

“But after everything, we probably don’t deserve to win this game. But it’s tough to play here because the pitch is small and it’s not proper. The grass was not okay, but we tried to adapt ourselves for this game, but it was so tough.”

Sekhukhune head coach Eric Tinkler revealed that a top-three finish is the target and he’s trying to get that message across to his players after they fell away in the run-in to last season as Stellenbosch’s main challengers.

“We want that number three spot to try and get into CAF, you know that’s been the objective,” Tinkler said. “That was what the club brought me in here for, to get a team into the CAF competition.

“So that is my purpose. That is my objective. Obviously, I have to relay that message to the players and make them aware of that.”
